With Darrell's blessing, I'm creating a Thread where I will share various stats from the history of the Vintage Baseball Guild.
(1927-1969 so far)
Anybody is free to ask for any statistics they want to see, or post their own if they like.
(You'd need access to the databases to peruse them, and thus have purchased the seasons from DMB)
So if you're interested in either league-wide stats, stats for your franchise, or individual career stats, just ask and I'll do my best.
I'll start with a list of the longest hitting streaks:
------Longest hit streak------ ------------------------------ ------------------------------
Lindstrom, F Lou28 42
Lazzeri, T SF30 41
Ashburn, R Chi55 40
Foxx, J Car28 39

At the time Spahn was winding up his career, I had no idea he was so close to the 300 win threshold and probably would have doing more micromanaging to help his chances if I had known. Fortunately he made it anyway.

Tommy Bridges' 2.86 career ERA is even more impressive when you consider the time period in which he compiled it: 1930-1945. Much of that time period, roughly 1930-39, was a tough time for pitchers.

Looking at these stats reminds me of things I had forgotten from our early seasons. For example, I had forgotten about my 1932 pitching staff's one-two punch of Wes Ferrell (28-5) and Vic Sorrell (28-6). In recent years the best I could say about most of my top pitchers is that they would be, at most, candidates for the Hall of Reasonably Good.

Thanks for doing this, Frank. It made me look at a couple of pitchers- namely Billy Pierce and Larry Jackson- who were really good in VBG. I think they’re mostly forgotten by the general fan now, but they were excellent in real life too.
I also noticed that, for someone who has been in the league since the beginning I have surprisingly few players on the leaderboards.

One player about whom I was curious was Lefty Grove; he does show up on all time lists, although not as well as one might expect given his real-life performance, and not once on the season best lists. Some analysts have described his 1931 season as the best ever by a pitcher. He was 31-4 with a 2.06 ERA (IRL). Obviously, the "raw" ERA is fairly impressive, but not to the degree that it appears when one considers the context of the 1931 AL season, when the league ERA was 4.38. Grove's ERA+ (ERA compared to the league with correction for park effects) that season was 217. While Baseball-Reference.com shows Grove's 1931 ERA+ of 217 as "only" tied for the 22nd of all time, there is only one real-life pitching season during the time span we have covered (1927-1969) with a better ERA+: Bob Gibson in 1968.
John, I had a similar feeling about having had so few players on the leaderboards, although I was out of the league for eight seasons.

Lefty Grove was my very first pick in the inaugural draft (#6 overall, I think) and I felt the way you did; while he was always very good, he was never quite as great as i had expected him to be. I eventually traded him to He Who Must Not Be Named (Casey Tibbetts) for Bucky Walters and a #1, and I felt good about the trade.

I had forgotten that Hank Aaron and Mickey Mantle played for the same team from 1954-1965. Two of the Top-3 Home Run hitters never made it to the World Series. (As far as I can tell and honestly I'm not rubbing it in to any current or past owners of the Spoon River/Tulsa franchises)
Here are their career stats:
