OTIS NAMED 1970 QQ RECIPIENT AND CARPS’ TOP ROOKIE
QUASQUETON, IA: The Quasqueton Quillback Carpsuckers announced today that rookie center fielder Amos Otis will receive two of the team’s top honors for the 1970 season. Otis will be awarded the 1970 Quintessential Quillback trophy, given each year to the team’s most valuable player. Otis excelled at batting and baserunning, and was the most productive all-around offensive player on the team as measured by the Runs Created formula. He hit .314 with an on-base percentage of .370 and a .446 slugging average, and stole 55 bases in 66 attempts for an outstanding .833 success rate. He tied for 5th in the league in hits with 222, tied for 4th place in runs scored with 138, tied for 5th in doubles with 39, and tied for 2nd in the league in triples with 14. He was a durable and reliable player, starting every game in center fielder and totaling 782 plate appearances, 2nd-most in the league. On the defensive side of the ledger Otis was a very good center fielder who committed only 4 errors all season.
The 23-year-old Otis will also receive the team’s Outstanding Rookie award. 21-year-old pitcher Wayne Simpson was given Honorable Mention in the Outstanding Rookie category and named the Carps’ Outstanding Pitcher for 1970. Simpson won a spot in the starting rotation in spring training and pitched like a veteran all season, compiling an 18-8 record to tie for 2nd in the league in wins, with an ERA of 3.11, 4th-best in the league.
Pitcher Eddie Fisher was given the Carpe Diem Award, given to a Carpsucker player who begins the season with a low-profile role or limited playing time but works his way into a key role by seizing opportunities to demonstrate his talent. Fisher began the season as a middle reliever, but was so effective that by late August he was tapped to fill in as a temporary member of the starting rotation. He was the team’s most effective starting pitcher during the final month of the season, going 5-0 in 6 starts with 2 complete games and 1 shutout, with an ERA of 1.74 and WHIP of 0.84.
