Darrell's recent post about tardy EOS award ballots got me to thinking...
My ballot is often late primarily because it includes Rookie of the Year as a category, and I must admit, I generally wait for someone to do the heavy lifting of figuring out who the rookies are. Once someone takes it upon themselves to do the research and post the results, I get my voting done pretty quickly.
But really, my interest in who the VBG rookie of the year is would fit in a flea's navel. I don't remember if any of my players ever won it, and if they did I probably said, "hey, cool" to myself and forgot about it two minutes later. And half the time, after I have submitted my ballot, someone else posts some hitherto unknown candidate that I wish I had voted for.
So, I was wondering what you all would think about possibly replacing the rookie award with a "fireman of the year" type award for outstanding relief pitcher. The VBG is well into the era in which relievers were stars in their own right rather than just failed starters. And it would be a lot easier to research than the rookies are. Thoughts?
Also, Darrell, I'll get my EOS ballot in real soon. Honest. For sure...

Personally, I prefer the ROY. If a relief pitcher was truly outstanding in a particular year, I would give that pitcher consideration for pitcher of the year when filling out my awards ballot.

I like the idea, as my ROY routine is about the same as John's. If most don't like the idea of replacing ROY with a "closer of the year", perhaps we could add it? Frank

Listen, I'm one of the oldest members in time in the league and I relish the ROY award voting. Please do not change it. Bob McMeen/Texas Aggies

I could care less about rookie of the year, although I did enjoy reading Darrell and Eric's arguments on their pitchers. If we had more arguments like that I might take more of an interest. Right now it is just a pain to research. Actually the league would be better off if I didn't vote on ROY.

I love the Rookie of the Year balloting. It gives us a chance to vote for guys like Rich Nye and Coco Laboy who shine in their rookie years and then decline rapidly afterwards. It's fun to give these guys a quick moment in the sun. My .02 ...
